Shenzhen is where dental implants meet the border: cheaper than Hong Kong, a short train ride away, and packed with both public hospitals and private chains. The question most people actually face isn’t “is it good?” but “public hospital or private clinic?” — and the answer changes the price, the wait, the language and the plan.

General information, not medical advice. Only a dentist who has examined you, ideally with a 3D scan, can say whether implants suit you.

The two routes in Shenzhen

Public hospitals. Shenzhen Stomatology Hospital (70 Guiyuan Road North, Luohu) is reported as the city’s first public specialised dental hospital, opened in 2020. Alongside it, large general hospitals run dental centres — Peking University Shenzhen Hospital and Shenzhen People’s Hospital both describe implant services. Public institutions follow regulated implant pricing, and complex cases are what they do best. The trade-off is queues, booking through Chinese-language systems and patchy English. Check the current departments and appointment routes directly — they change.

Private clinics and cross-border chains. Concentrated in Futian and Luohu near the Hong Kong crossings, and in Nanshan. Many are set up for Hong Kong and international patients — for instance the Hong Kong-founded VICKONG DENTAL chain lists branches at Luohu and Futian and consultation in several languages including English and Cantonese (mentioned as an example of the category, not a recommendation). Appointments are quicker and there’s more flexibility on implant brand — at prices the clinic sets.

What’s capped and what isn’t

Guangdong regulated implant pricing after China’s 2023 volume-based procurement. From the provincial health-insurance bureau’s April 2023 notice and explainer:

  • Medical-service fee, one regular implant, public institutions: regulation target ≤ ¥4,500 (¥4,300 in the lowest price zone).
  • Implant system: winning price averaged just over ¥900.
  • Crowns: average listed price about 50% lower, from as little as ¥1,078.
  • Service + implant + crown together: roughly ¥7,000 in most areas, per the bureau.

Two cautions: this framework is aimed at public institutions — private clinics set their own prices — and the three-year procurement cycle started 20 April 2023 and was scheduled to run to 19 April 2026, so ask what applies now.

Anything outside “one regular implant” — bone graft, sinus lift, premium implant brand, temporary teeth, CT — is extra. That’s why two quotes for “one implant” often aren’t comparable. Our dental implants guide and China Dental Price Index show how the figures stack up.

Public or private: how to decide

For a complicated mouth, a diagnosis from a public hospital followed by a comparison private quote is a sensible pattern. For a straightforward single tooth, a well-vetted private clinic is usually the practical option.

If you’re crossing from Hong Kong

Implants are a two-stage treatment — placement, months of healing, then the crown — so plan at least two crossings, plus review visits. Ask up front what happens if something needs attention after you’re home: does the warranty cover follow-up, who will see you in Hong Kong, and are your records, implant brand and lot details in a form another dentist can use? For the cost comparison and how many people cross, see dental costs: China vs Hong Kong.

Five questions before you commit

  1. Which implant system and crown material, in writing?
  2. What’s the full total — scan, placement, abutment, crown — and what could be added?
  3. Who places it, and how many similar cases have they done?
  4. What’s guaranteed, and does it cover a return trip?
  5. Will I get my records in a portable form?
