Already have dental implants and want them checked or cleaned while visiting China? Start by asking for an assessment of your existing implants, rather than booking a generic cleaning and assuming it covers everything. Tell the clinic what was fitted, what you want checked, and when you arrive and leave. The dentist can then explain the appropriate maintenance or repair, the likely cost and the next steps.
This guide concerns implants you already have. Our new dental implant guide covers replacing missing teeth; our implant recovery guide concerns care following placement. For a standard cleaning enquiry, see our routine dental care guide.
What does implant maintenance mean?
An implant maintenance enquiry can mean a routine review, professional cleaning, or a concern about the crown or bridge supported by the implant. These are different requests. Describe what you want checked and let the dentist identify the work required, rather than choosing a procedure from a price list yourself.
The American Academy of Periodontology explains that implants need professional review and that inflammation can affect the tissues around them. A maintenance appointment is an opportunity for a clinician to assess those tissues; this article cannot tell you whether yours need treatment.
When you contact a clinic, distinguish between:
| Your enquiry | What to clarify before booking |
|---|---|
| Routine cleaning and review of existing implants | Does the appointment include assessment and cleaning around implants? |
| A crown or bridge that you want checked | Can the dentist assess the existing restoration and advise on possible work? |
| A proposed repair or replacement | What records are needed to assess the case, and what can only be confirmed in person? |
| New discomfort or another change around an implant | Tell a dentist about the change; ask about an appropriate assessment rather than assuming it is a cleaning issue. |
If you have a concern now, seek advice from your treating dentist rather than waiting for a planned overseas trip.
What records should you bring from your original dentist?
Ask the receiving clinic which records it wants, and share what you already have. An implant passport, treatment summary and previous imaging give the dentist more context. If you do not know the implant brand or the exact work that was fitted, say so; you do not need to identify it yourself.
For example, Straumann’s implant passport has fields for implant and component labels, tooth position, placement date and restoration type. It illustrates the kind of record to request from your original clinic, without implying that your implant is a Straumann product.
A useful preparation list is:
- The date and location of your original treatment, if known.
- An implant passport or records showing the system and components, if available.
- Existing X-rays or treatment notes, in the format requested by the receiving clinic.
- A plain description of what you want checked and when it changed, if applicable.
- Your arrival and departure dates and the city you intend to visit.
Share personal records directly through a channel agreed with the clinic. Do not post them in a public review or discussion thread. Our medical records guide covers requesting copies for future care.
How much does implant cleaning or maintenance cost in China?
Ask for an initial estimate for your stated needs, with the assessment charge separated from any proposed maintenance or repair. A routine cleaning promotion does not establish the price of work on an existing implant restoration. The clinic needs to explain what its figure includes and what remains subject to examination.
Our sourced dental price index offers background on published dental charges. It does not provide a universal price for maintaining or repairing implants placed elsewhere. Use it as context when asking the clinic about its own estimate.
Before agreeing to work, ask:
- Is the consultation included, or charged separately?
- What does the suggested maintenance appointment cover?
- Are additional examinations or imaging included if the dentist recommends them?
- If repair work is proposed, what is the separate price and scope?
- What would change the estimate after the examination?
You can request an assessment first and consider the dentist’s proposal afterwards. An initial budget helps you plan; it is not a diagnosis or a final treatment quote.
Will the appointments fit your stay in China?
Send the clinic your dates before accepting an appointment. Ask what can be assessed during that visit and which decisions depend on the examination. If work on a restoration is proposed, ask whether identifying components, obtaining parts or using a laboratory would affect the schedule. Those are questions for the clinic, not tasks to fit into an assumed one-day cleaning slot.
Keep these confirmations separate:
- The assessment booking: the clinic, location and appointment time.
- The proposed work: what the dentist recommends after assessment.
- The travel implications: any further visits, checks or return trip the plan requires.
For a fixed stay, tell the dentist that your departure date cannot move. Ask what can realistically be completed and how any unfinished work or follow-up would be handled. Our dental stay-length guide provides broader travel context; the receiving dentist confirms your case.
How to start an enquiry
A short message is enough: explain that you already have implants, what you want checked, your preferred city and your travel dates. You can start by asking about an assessment without committing to maintenance or repair. China Medical Journey can help with an initial cost enquiry and appointment coordination, with remote support in English. We will check what we can arrange in your chosen city.
For an established Shanghai entry point, read our Shanghai dental guide. For other destinations, use the relevant city guides to orient yourself and confirm the individual clinic’s willingness to take your case.
FAQ
Can I ask a dentist in China to check implants placed abroad?
You can ask a clinic to assess implants placed elsewhere. Share any implant records and explain what you want checked. Confirm that the clinic accepts the case before travelling; an assessment does not guarantee that it can carry out a repair.
Is implant cleaning the same as a normal scale-and-polish?
Do not assume they are the same booking or price. Tell the clinic you already have implants and ask what its assessment and maintenance appointment includes. The dentist decides whether you need routine maintenance, treatment around the implant, or work on the restoration.
Do I need my implant passport?
If you have one, send a copy when the clinic asks and bring it to the appointment. It records information about the implant and restoration. If you do not have it, tell the clinic and ask your original dentist for the records that are available.
Can implant maintenance or a repair be completed during a short trip?
The clinic can check appointment availability before you travel, but the dentist must assess the work required. Share your arrival and departure dates and ask whether any further visits, parts or laboratory work could affect the schedule. Completion during your stay is not guaranteed.
